For Santikos Theatres It Isn't Just About Movies Any More!

More than 80 years ago, Louis Santikos, a Greek entrepreneur, brought cinema to San Antonio. Having immigrated to Texas Mr. Louis Santikos opened one of the state’s first nickelodeons in the early 1900’s. By 1924, he had established the first opulent movie theatre in San Antonio, the Palace Theatre. This endeavor was only the beginning as the Santikos Company continued to introduce many more of these grand theatres throughout the decades that followed.

After graduating from St. Mary's University, his son John entered the movie business. His first venture was the Olmos theatre in San Antonio, a successful single screen theatre.

In continuing the Santikos legacy, he acquired and built thirteen drive-in theatre locations, thus offering the only Drive-In theatre experience in San Antonio. The Santikos Mission 4 Drive-In, one of the original Drive-In theatres, is still in operation today.

Adding to his entrepreneurial resume, John Santikos introduced San Antonio to its first multi-screen indoor theatre, the Century South Theatre multiplex. Additional theatres were added over the next 2 decades to this initial development with the construction of the Northwest, Galaxy, Westlakes and Embassy multi-screen theatres. The recent additions of the Silverado 16, Mayan 14 and the creation of the new art cinema and cafe, The Bijou at Crossroads has brought Santikos Theatres back to the forefront of San Antonio’s quality entertainment.

In 1987, the operational division of the theatres was sold to Act III Theatres. However, in May 2001, John Santikos returned to his beloved theatre business by acquiring the theatres he had sold. With the addition of the Greek themed Palladium mega-plex located at IH-10 West and La Cantera, the highly anticipated construction of the Granada Theatre located at 1604 and Potranco Road and with future entertainment venues in the planning stages, Santikos remains a prominent name as the largest locally owned and operated theatre circuit in San Antonio.

Ms Seraphine Lander Launches Caribbean Stylz Magazine

Ms Seraphine Lander, publisher of Caribbean Stylz Magazine, obtained a degree in business at the University of Houston. After graduating and working for a few years, Ms Lander decided to pursue her hobby and enrolled in the Gems Beauty Academy on the island of St. Croix in the US Virgin Islands. Ms Lander has owned Sera's Beauty Studio on St. Croix for the past six years and began planning her magazine in 2001.

When I needed a temporary business office to do some online work, I was referred to Fed Ex Kinko's here in San Antonio. I was pleasantly surprised to learn the wealth and extent of services the local business centers offer to the community (small business people and individuals as well).

Internet Pioneer Ms Sandra Williams: Celebrating the African American Business Experience

A little about this extraordinary Internet pioneer and cultural activist:

Ms Sandra Williams, who is not shy about letting people know her age of 55, has a multifaceted background that has allowed her first and foremost to address people’s personal needs. Ms Williams admits that she has always been interested in research and sharing information with people. When the Internet and World Wide Web opened up to the world, it was just what she needed to continue sharing information with the whole world.

With her mission to show the power of the internet to African Americans, Ms Williams is also fearful that Black people, by our failure to maximize our use of the internet, are missing a great opportunity to improve our lives. Ms Williams contends, and I agree, that the Internet is a tool that can improve our communities and our lives.

After a medical, life-changing experience, Ms Williams became "powered up" to help others to discover how the Internet could change their lives and currently uses her blog to list black businesses she finds online.

Ms Williams' current project entails using the power of the internet to help her friend, Ms Bridgett Hollingsworth, owner/founder of Bahiyah Black Woman Magazine (www.bwmmag.com) to do research. (Watch for more coverage of this magazine in an upcoming edition.)

Through the use of the Internet Ms Williams has been able to communicate with countless people around the world and find resources that are helpful in running a business from home.

AdminProf.com, a One-Woman Endeavor That Turned a Simple Idea into a Successful Website Service.

As an administrative assistant Susan Silva decided to build a website. Like many who want to do business on the web, she instantly thought ecommerce. For weeks she racked her brain trying to come up with something original. She bought an easy to remember URL www.adminprof.com and continued to think. Finally, she came to the conclusion there were too many ecommerce sites out there and put her ideas of creating her little niche on the web aside.

Then one day at work she had a project and opened up the web and went to her bookmarks. It was then she had one of those moments and thought, "Wow, it sure would be cool to put these in one spot on the internet."

At her last place of employment Susan was fortunate to work with many wonderful people. The Administrative Professionals of the company where she worked came together to form a group named ACE (Assistants Creating Excellence). Once a month they would meet over lunch and brainstorm, share, and collaborate on information pertinent to them. The topics ranged from company info, training, personal enhancement, streamlining ideas, sharing resources and contacts.

Most importantly they shared experiences. That is when the idea came to her: between the two concepts 1) Internet resources and info and 2) information from Administrative Professionals all over, she could create a useful website for office professionals of all types.

AdminProf.com was created in August of 1999. It has grown to include resources and articles on careers, links to useful sites, tutorials on software, information on how to start your own Virtual Business and much more.
