Milisa's Creative Way Through Nursing School

Milisa's goal is to graduate college with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree and go on to medical school. For her, the sky is the limit when it comes to setting goals for her to achieve.

Currently an undergraduate nursing student and a single mother with a dream, Milisa would like to meet as many positive people as she can. Because she is all about self-improvement and goal-setting, Milisa wants to surround herself with like minds.

Here's an ambitious young lady who's truly maximizing her potential despite the fact that, while growing up, life wasn't easy for her. In and out of group homes, Milisa never had the opportunity to graduate high school.

It wasn't until she became pregnant with my son that she finally realized she had to make a change for the better. Amazingly, Milisa took the GED exam and evetually enrolled in a Medical Assistant program 2 weeks before her son was born. Graduation gave her the confidence she needed to realize that she could accomplish much more. Thus, Milisa went on to enroll herself in a nursing program at an excellent university and is anxiously looking forward to graduating in 3 years.

As much as Milisa has accomplished, she cannot fulfill her dream without your help. Working 2 jobs during the summer months in order to support herself and her son, Milisa will only be able to work one part-time job when she returns to school in September. Thus, she came up with an ambitious and creative way to see herself through nursing school.

Milisa has set up a website in the hopes that folks will find it in their hearts to help her get through college so she would not have to struggle so hard. The recipient of scholarships and loans to pay for her education, Milisa is struggling with miscellaneous expenses.

Please find it in your heart to help Milisa achieve her goals.

In her own words,

"So if you would like to donate $1.00 or more, it would be greatly appreciated. My goal is to raise enough money to help me pay for my books, daycare, and miscellaneous expenses."

I have created a website called PayAStudent.com/ with the sole purpose of building on a dream, a dream that I will one day be able to go through college without having to struggle so hard. I am a single mother and while some people may feel I am using this as an excuse I am not. I am trying to provide for me and my son while I strive to make a better life for the both of us. I am working two jobs I am going to school to become a nurse and after that I would like to go on to Medical school. Thank you in advance."

Bloggers and their viewers will be raising and donating money for students and schools in New Orleans and other parts of the country. Won't you help meet the Challenge by choosing to fund a Specific Challenge?

ia a non-profit Web site that brings teachers and donors together to fund specific student projects that range from "Magical Math Centers" ($200) to "Big Book Bonanza" ($320), to "Cooking Across the Curriculum" ($1,100). Any individual can search such proposals by areas of interest, learn about classroom needs, and choose to fund the project(s) they find most compelling. In completing a project, donors receive a feedback package of student photos and thank-you notes, a teacher impact letter, and an expenditure report showing that their tax-deductible gift was spent as directed.

is a simple way to provide students in need with resources that our public schools often lack. At this not-for-profit web site, teachers submit project proposals for materials or experiences their students need to learn. These ideas become classroom reality when concerned individuals, whom they call Citizen Philanthropists, choose projects to fund.

Lynne Clarke: A Contemporary Christian Singer/Songwriter with a Gift for Verse and Melody

Lynne ClarkeSay "Hello!" to Lynne, a devout Christian who has seen what Jesus can do in the life of a believer. At the age of six, Lynne’s parents left everything behind and immigrated to the USA. They literally sacrificed all in this move to bring the family of seven from Venezuela to the USA.

As the youngest of five, Lynne took stock of how her mother was able to go from being an elementary school teacher, to working as a maid in the US, raise five children while at the same time attend college to finally receive a degree as a top grade registered nurse. Lynne’s mom proved to be a powerful model of faith and perseverance and the wonderful things that one can do when one opens his or her heart to Jesus.

Lynne Clarke is a Contemporary Christian Singer/Songwriter with a gift for verse and melody. She prefers to tell stories through her lyrics that show both practical examples of faith in action and convey the message of the gospel. Though songwriting came later, music has always played a major role in her life. Lynne began singing in the fourth grade in her elementary school glee club. As an adult she sang in the church choir.

Initially performing for friends and family, Lynne began writing Christian music as an outlet during a difficult period in her life. This led to her later playing at church and larger community events. Now with a faithful following of supporters, Lynne believes that the Lord is calling her to share her music with the whole world.

Linda G. Martinez: A Christian Latin Nightingale Sings to the Abused about God's Love

Born and raised in New York City, Linda started her studies in music at an early age following the encouragement of her father who recently passed away. With a great love for music himself, he always encouraged Linda to love it, respect it, and make it part of her life.

At age 11 Linda moved with her parents to Puerto Rico where she studied voice and popular singing at The Puerto Rico Conservatory of Music and became more active in Christian music. With 4 Christian CDs recorded in Spanish, Linda continued her studies in music with a vocal coach and personal friend. It was in 1992 that Linda, by the glory of God, won the Christian festival Festival Lira of Puerto Rico with the song Mi Deseo de Alabarte (My Desire to Worship You). It was after winning the Christian Festival that Linda recorded her first CD.

With a BA in Communications, Linda counts music as her real passion.
"Music is my life! It's what I breath. I thank God for giving me this talent. Music is what my soul loves.Music is my passion and my calling from God."

As a child abuse survivor, Linda likes to tell her testimony or story at her concerts and share with her audiences what she has experienced because she knows how abused people feel. Having been there, Linda knows they feel hurt, pain, sorrow, sadness, and bitterness with a lack of self-esteem. They tend to see others as much better than themselves because they feel so lonely and always hurting deep inside. Linda knows how all this feels because she's been there.

A sensitive soul who is passionate about God and music, Linda feels that music can say so many things with a song. When she listens to a beautiful voice or a well played instrument, she feels like angels were playing the instruments or singing with such beauty and peace.
"Music is a lovely blessing that God gave us."

Linda likes to sing with her Christian band in prisons, shelters, juvenille detention centers, streets, Christian concerts, or whereever there is a need of hope, love, and salvation.

Say "Hello!" to HGM Featured Artist: Mrs. Tenisha Alexander

HGM Featured Artist: Mrs. Tenisha Alexander

Born in East St. Louis, Illinois, Tenisha Alexander began singing publicly at the age of 12. With a love for poetry and music, Mrs. Alexander wrote poems continuously and played the piano, French horn, and acoustic guitar in the band and church.

Coming from a family of 16, Tenisha's father didn’t know the extent of her singing talent until she participated in a talent show. After hearing Tenisha sing, tears came to his eyes. Since then, he has encouraged Tenisha to pursue singing, saying that she was gifted to sing and the sky is the limit.

Currently working in accounting, Tenisha is married to the wonderful Minister Jason Alexander who was the second person to encourage her to pursue a singing career.

According to Tenisha, "Jason is 25 but his wisdom is beyond his years. God has used him to help prepare me for my journey as an artist. I realized, I’m not an ordinary singer. I’m a worshipper and praiser, who has been called and chosen to lift my voice while ministering to all. I accepted my calling to the music ministry and willingly go forth to uplift, encourage and tell somebody about God."

Suzanne SnoSavenski, Christian Author of Suspense Novels, Finds Her Calling

A Christian author of suspense novels, Suzanne SnoSavenski was born in Carmel, California, the oldest of four children.

During the early part of her marriage, Suzanne received a typewriter from her husband. With a strong desire to type, Suzanne searched for topics to type about. An idea that came to her was one that she feels was the Lord’s way of telling her to put her feelings and experiences as an abused victim into a book.

Suzanne only got to five chapters when her youngest son accidentally trashed it. Putting it aside as a lost, Suzanne gave up on it until her husband found it in 2004. Suzanne’s decision to finish it was put on hold because she felt that she “had a lot of spiritual growing to do.”

Having increasingly grown into a Godly woman who wants nothing more than to lead people to God, Suzanne has finished three books. Feeling that sometimes she doesn't have the right words to minister to people, Suzanne hopes her books will speak for her.

Her second book, Raging Fire, is now available as an ebook.

Ila Blount: A Lady with a Vison for Ladies

Ila's vision is to encourage and inspire women to love God with all their mind, body, and soul.

At the tender age of 13, Ila gave her life to God. One can say that middle school was Ila’s training ground to spread the news about waiting for God’s Best.

It was one day during recess that Ila broke out with a song and dance to songs like “You Don’t Have To Take Your Clothes off to Have a Good Time”. This was her way of encouraging her classmates to remain celibate until their wedding day.

Today, the author of a book entitled,
The Milk Aint 4 Free, Ila hopes that her witty and insightful book will encourage women to wait for God‘s Best.

Throughout the years, God's grace has been upon Ila's life.

Mark Henry: The Jazz Writer and His Sons Work Together and Play Together

Mark Henry, known as The Jazz Writer, was born in Los Angeles, California. With his love of music beginning in his early childhood, Mark could be found listening to legends like Hugh Masekela, James Brown, Donny Hathaway, Stevie Wonder, and The Supremes.

Drawn by the emotional instrumentation and harmonies, he soon learned to play the guitar at the tender age of 8, bought a bass at age 11, and shortly thereafter became the bass player in his uncle's band. Having studied bass in high school during his impassioned teenage years, Mark was captivated by the great jazz innovators of the seventies who invented a new genre of music. Geniuses like Grover Washington Jr., Bob James, Ronnie Laws, Herbie Hancock, Dexter Wenzel, Donald Byrd, Patrice Rushen, Bobbi Humphrey, the Jazz Crusaders, and a list far too long to complete here were combining tight rhythms, emotional chord progressions, memorable melodies, and inspired solos to form what would become Smooth Jazz.

Music became Mark's first love. He studied flute, piano, music theory, recording arts technology, and radio before he began creating his own innovations of jazz. Eventually purchasing his own studio equipment, Mark took up Pro Audio recording, mixing and editing local bands and independent artists, recording shows, pads, PSA's and liners for Adele Fortier's legendary Gospel Connection radio show, and editing for the IT Conversations Network. All the while his skills as a jazz writer continued to develop, becoming evermore chill.

His two sons, Mark and Shawn, also embrace a love of music, first as trumpet players in their middle and high school bands, then as talented songwriters, producers, and recording engineers. Working together, this family organization has developed a powerful smooth jazz production entity, always uniquely outside the boundaries of genre to make great jazz while embracing the widest audience through crossover appeal.

Mr. Marshall Jones Still Singing at 92. Now That's Maximizing His Potential!

Joy is what Mr. Marshall Jones brings every time he sings. Born in the little town of Monroe, Georgia and raised in the Georgia Mountains town of Summerville, Mr. Marshall Jones has been singing and praising God for almost 90 years.

He celebrated his 92nd birthday on December 10th, 2005 and his voice is still holding strong!!

The son of a minister, Rev. C. L. Jones, Marshall Jones was exposed to hymns and spirituals at an early age. His love for singing surfaced as young boy when he would listen to older men and women sing in the church. While he has been an active member of the A. M. E. Zion church for over 85 years, no matter where he goes, before he can get through the church door, somebody is asking him to sing. And, Mr. Jones, in spite of how he may be feeling at the time, will be obedient and sing.

"This is the country way of doing things. I enjoy singing for the Lord. Nowadays, the music is so loud; you can't hear what they singing. I want to hear the words. Even if it's a moan, I want to hear it", says Mr. Jones.

Mr. Jones can best be described as a man who uses his singing talent to worship and praise his God. During the 1940's and 1950's, Mr. Jones was lead singer for the Tri-City Harmonizers, a popular gospel Quartet of that time. Performing throughout the South, The Tri-City Harmonizers sang with such gospel groups as The Five Blind Boys and The Golden Gates. Every Sunday morning listeners could hear Mr. Jones and his group perform inspiring tunes on Rome, Georgia's WRGA radio station!

Mr. Marshall Jones is dedicated to spreading God's message through song. He delights when approached by children and youth who tell of his positive influence on their lives. Be it humming an old hymn around his house or uttering melodious praises in God's house, Marshall Jones believes that there is always time to sing!

Mr. Jones was a devoted husband to the late Eva Jones and is a loving father of three daughters (Marshall Ann, Gayle, and Rosalyn), five grandsons, five great-grand children, many nieces and nephews and lots of folks who just love to be around him. You can call him "Daddy", "Granddaddy", "Uncle Marsh", or "Mr. Jones"; he'll answer to them all because he loves the sound of children around.

"They just make me happy", says Mr. Jones.
"I'll just get down on the floor with 'em and let 'em beat me up and they just laugh when I start crying. Boy! That is fun to see them laugh."

Just sit near Mr. Jones long enough and you are sure to hear a familiar tune. Soon you will find yourself singing and smiling along with him while he praises the Lord as only he knows how. His music is a timeless message for today through stories of yesterday: love of family, love of wife, even through sickness, and love of God through it all.

His message is for God's people, not just Black people nor White people; not for Americans nor non-Americans; not just Church people, but for those who believe in God and desire to follow God's instructions.

The Holy Spirit will speak truth to their hearts and they will know that Jesus is Lord. Now that's Good Religion!

"Of One Accord" Offers Sweet-Sounding Harmonies of Good Old-Fashioned Southern Gospel Music

Of One Accord

Of One Accord blends the sweet-sounding harmonies of good old-fashioned southern gospel music with a contemporary feeling to make each concert a musical experience. From old standards like Step Into The Water and Jesus Is Coming Soon to a host of new music, Of One Accord has a message in song for everyone.

The group makes its home in Frisco, Texas, just north of Dallas. Baritone-vocalist David McMahon and bass-vocalist Darrin Bruner co-founded the group in 2004 to reach the lost and encourage believers through the ministry of southern gospel music and their personal testimonies. Within a month, they added lead-vocalist John Graves, and a year later, tenor-vocalist Steven Coyne joined the quartet.

In that short time, the group has performed for local churches, at gospel festivals and home-goings, and at the contest stages at National Quartet Convention. Each member shares a deep love of southern gospel music. The timeless message found in these rich harmonies impacts each of their lives every day, and they want to share that message with others.

With a rich diversity in backgrounds and sounds reminiscent of The Cathedrals and The Statesmen quartets, the combination of all four voices blended together in tight harmonies has audiences sitting on the edge of their seats. This quartet truly has a sound unique in today's Southern Gospel music industry.

Leigh Nash's Charming Audiences with Her Ethereal Voice.

Leigh Nash grew up in the southern Texas town of New Braunfels, not too far from San Antonio. Two years ago Leigh bottomed out after finding herself face to face with the dark underbelly of the protestant work ethic when giving and giving didn't equal getting what she always imagined.

Sixpence None the Richer, the band she had been a member of for nearly half of her life, thirteen years all told, was contemplating calling it quits. Leigh and high school mate, Matt Slocum, had formed the group as teenagers, touring in sedans and cramped vans, slowly building a career.

In spite of the colossal success the band enjoyed with ubiquitous pop singles like Kiss Me and There She Goes, the group was continually plagued by the business woes of the trade and finally decided to split ways amicably. Disoriented by this major change, Leigh and her husband left their Nashville home of ten years and moved to Los Angeles.

It was a major life change for Leigh who had been with Sixpence since she was fourteen. Age 27 at the time and not knowing what else to do, Leigh started writing songs, while seated on her back porch over an Easter weekend.

While in Los Angeles, Leigh penned a batch of songs that would eventually comprise her first solo record,
Blue on Blue
, a sweetly understated collection of musings on love and motherhood due out August 15th 2006 on One Son Records, Leigh's own imprint label through Nettwerk Productions.

Alway wanting to do a record on her own, if the band were to break up, Leigh finally had the opportunity to do so, recalls Leigh.

A few months after Sixpence None the Richer parted ways, Leigh welcomed her son, Henry, into the world, along with a new sense of creative vitality. Leigh explained that her songs were not intentionally centered on any one concept, but admited her new-found maternity was a source of inspiration.

Motherhood came pretty fast, causing her to start writing much about Henry. With a bushel of songs in tow, Leigh set up shop with Canadian producer Pierre Marchand (Sarah McLachlan, Rufus Wainwright) last winter at his barn in Milles Isle an hour outside of Montreal. Recording there with a slew of Montreal-area musicians, Leigh felt the auspices of home without the soreness of Sixpence's split. Marchand and Leigh co-wrote two songs, album opener, All Along the Wall and Between the Lines. Marchand's lush, warm production gives Leigh's songs an earthy luster that carefully cushions her sweet, lilting voice.

In the meantime, Leigh moved back to Music City and into a new community of musicians a recently formed rock collective called Movement Nashville. The group hopes to dispel the myth that musically Nashville is limited to Country or Christian.

Leigh has two distinct poles of inspiration:
  1. her work with Sixpence in the Christian music sphere and

  2. her childhood fascination with older female country artists like Tanya Tucker, Loretta Lynn and Patsy Cline. In many ways Blue on Blue emanates squarely between those two regions without being pulled down by any of the inbred trappings of the genres. Leigh's faith informs her songwriting in equal measure as her affinity for country music.

Leigh started singing country music and learning old country songs on the guitar when she was twelve. Although extremely shy, but with the desire to get on stage, Leigh started calling clubs herself to ask if she could come down and sing.

Before long, the adolescent Leigh was singing Loretta Lynn's and Tanya Tucker's songs like "You Aint Woman Enough to Take My Man" and "Texas When I Die" on alcohol-free, open mike Sunday nights, and backed by a middle-aged band of town locals. In spite of her country allure, Leigh never developed an accent, and later in life her interest in pop acts like The Sundays, Innocence Mission, and The Cranberries provided more formative material for her songwriting and singing.

On
Blue on Blue
, Leigh's croon possesses an unadorned glisten, a sensibility that is simultaneously natural and ethereal. On the album-closing ballad, Just a Little, Leigh's voice floats through an earnest tribute to her son, Henry, while on the epic, Ocean Size Love, her voice soars and shimmers over the Coldplay-sized, piano-driven song.

My Idea of Heaven radiates a child-like simplicity with Leigh's pop awareness guided by a lyrical unfussiness and bright guitar hooks. While Nervous in the Light begins as a tender confession of love and life's fleetingness, it builds into a strong, heartfelt petition for direction, continually held together through Leigh's impassioned but effortless vocals.

With Sixpence behind her and a two-year-old son along for the ride, Leigh is prepped to return to music even though she never really left. Now perhaps a bit more career-conscious and business-weary, Leigh reveals that tired edge without losing her dainty charm. Because of this, Blue on Blue is not just a carefree jog through the present, but a vividly felt exercise wholly informed by the past. In the end, it's bliss.

Blue on Blue in stores August 15th, 2006!
